01:22 pm - I have a show in LA next month
I have a show at the Todd Browning Gallery in Los Angeles next month. I'm probably not going to be there for the opening, but you should stop in and BUY MY STUFF and send me photos of the show.

Image hotlinked from Todd Browning so they can be all like "wtf? why are there 100,000 page views on this?!"

Tim Archebold has a great photo blog here: http://timothyarchibald.blogspot.com/ It's sort of like what I'd expect Wil Wheaton's blog to be like if he were a photographer instead of a Unix nerd.

And Sam Fentress is "on my lable" -- I saw his book in pre-production while I was at the F+W office once. But I've never met him. It's a really great book.

10:39 pm - because he's in the news...
Joe Biden in an airplane hanger in Pennsylvania on the day that Al Gore announced Joe Lieberman as his running mate. Gore and Lieberman were an hour late so someone suggested Biden get up and talk and he talked for 59 minutes about economics, off the cuff, and I was struck dumb at how he was able to do that, for an hour, without an um, or an aah, cohesively, like a college professor who'd been doing it forever. He was an excellent speaker.

I used to live in Wilmington and I ran into him once at the grocery store, he was with Tom Carper, who, at the time, was my congressman and was sporting some serious 5 O'clock shadow. I was like "You're Joe Biden!" and he said "This is Tom Carper," and I said "Yeah, I know, but you're Joe Biden." (about seven years later in an elevator in the Press Club in Washington D.C. I repeated this performance of acute skill by pointing at the man in front of me and announcing "You're Karl Rove!" (Ronnie James Dio is not the only person who thinks I'm an idiot!)

Then a few years later I found myself in Bucharest Romania with Joe's sister, and campaign manager, Valerie. She was teaching women how to run for political office, I was photographing stuff.

I was sitting upstairs like a good boy working on my speech for the Rowan University convocation and came downstairs to look for a quote in a book, and now I'm sitting here with [info]trillian_stars slacking, watching the convention. She's a bad influence on me.

But you get this picture.

p.s. Note to Joe Biden: All the cool kids are using the Windsor knot now, the 4 in hand is so ... Beatles.

p.p.s. ken burns has the worst haircut on earth. that dude from Belfgore is now off the hook.

08:23 am - Who Killed Amanda Palmer
So, the Who Killed Amanda Palmer book is moving along. Last night I put together 100 photos that comprise the Great Stuff I've been working on, Neil sent out his first batch of Great Stuff. There is Great Stuff in the air peoplz. I'm amazed at how much we've accomplished in such a relatively short period of time.

Here's a portrait I took of Neil and Amanda.

10:19 pm - Haven't posted in ages but I am amused.
So I haven't had to use any poor skills in a long time, but we just got back from Banff and are totally out of money until Friday. My cupboards are pretty bare. So I had to get creative.

For lunch I made (or rather my lovely assistant Renzo made) creamy corn soup. Ingredients: 1 can of cream of chicken soup, with a can of creamed corn used instead of milk. Ended up adding a dash of milk anyway. Spiced it up with black pepper and chipotle powder.
Result = surprisingly yum.

Then for dinner... well I had a little soup left. And for some odd reason I have tons of spaghetti. In my fridge is some lonely herb and garlic cream cheese. So I mix it with the hot spaghetti, the rest of the chicken corn concoction, some curry powder, fennel seeds, more pepper, and some heat wave. Results were creamy, cheesy, chickeny, and spicy, and just right to help clear up my sniffles.

So see? Even if you've got nothing to eat, you probably have something to eat :)

09:41 pm - Yes, yes, yes, yes.
I took some super excellent photographs of cats at Will's house. He owns a million cats and that's one of the reasons I like his house so much. Also, that he's slightly crazy. I will now commence the showing of kittens:

Yes, I will win your hearts over with kittens.

In other news, I have some new work. I'll get started doing that (it's mostly internets work) when Cal leaves in September (2008/09/14) which is also when I'll get to packing, shipping, cleaning, and a last bit of paperwork so that my adventure in leaving this town will be complete. I'm swell except that Cal is leaving; I've gotten all attached to someone being around that isn't a cat and he's usually pretty nice to have around. Hm!

My current job is ridiculous and pathetic in it's new grade of idiocy. It's now reached a form of harassment which includes workmates reading this blog, printing out segments of entries, adding oh-so-witty statements to them (anonymously), and then putting them in my work education folder which other people aren't even supposed to be in. I'm not sure what that's supposed to accomplish but I'm sure it's very dear to a twelve-year-olds heart in it's maturity level. Bravo, you.

Today was a lovely day spent clothes shopping, pizza eating, and searching for opaque navy-coloured tights. You wouldn't think navy blue would be a difficult colour to find but it seems it is. My new, current favourite places to shop are Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters, Gap, and random ebay shops. Get with it.

It's time for sleep - good night - I've got to make Cal quit filling out strange contests on the internet. He wants to win things suddenly. What.

One of the great things about this blog is that it's like a magic hotel. You close your eyes and say:

Dear Magic Hotel,

[info]trillian_stars and I will be in Seattle on September 7th for a wedding and are looking for a place to crash that night.

And the magic hotel says.....

11:08 pm - Time For An Update.
So, something interesting happened to me. Or, a few interesting things happened to me in the past few days:

1) I was told, flat out, by a guy who works in an Esso station on whyte ave that they wouldn't hire me because i'm a girl. I didn't even bring in a resume, i just asked what shifts they were hiring for. I mean, i was dressed up for the bar so i looked /extra girly/, but seriously? In what country is that an appropriate response? DON'T SAY THAT. So much trouble can come from it.

2) So, my mom added me as a friend on facebook. And then blocked me. Because she didn't want people she knew to be able to see photos of me and what i do. Apparently i'm too weird for people she knows to accept me. I don't think she fully realizes that it doesn't matter, because if other people think you're a bad parent because your daughter isn't like their daughter, they aren't worth talking to. I'm a fantastic, talented, albeit moderately insane and very strange girl. But i'm fairly certain i'm not a person who you need to hide in a closet.

Sometimes i seriously wonder where my mother put her values. Though it does explain a whole lot of why i was, y'know, obsessed to the point of self-flagellation with having /everyone like me/. Not so much anymore. My mom can be a cunt, and it's better if i know and accept that. I love her for who she is, but at the same time, i'm fine realizing that she's got the interpersonal maturity of a fourteen year old.

3) I met a boy. And he is funny, and interesting, and /likes me/. He's also a bit of a prick (his words, not mine), and that works for me. This might not be a catastrophe. He's cute, too. I like him lots.

Yeah, welcome to my life.
I wonder.

05:46 am - Nikon 85mm f 1.8 Free to Right Home
Nikon 85mm f 1.8 Free to the Right Home

For you photographers out there -- in an amature's camera bag there are a very few lenses that do Most Things okay. And in a professional's camera bag, there are a whole bunch of lenses that do One Thing extremely well and other things not at all. We sometimes call these the "wow" lenses. They're the fish eyes, the super telephotos, things of that nature. This is one of the wow lenses and I want to give it away to the right person. I want to find the person who was me 20 years ago -- filled with ideas and opportunity but completely broke.

If you think you're that person, read on.

Click for a larger image

IF THIS LENS IS SO AWESOME, WHY ARE YOU GIVING IT AWAY?

There are some caviats to this lens.

1) It's manual focus. I've replaced it in my camera bag with an auto focus version.

2) It's ugly. Its been beat up. The glass is perfect and it's razor sharp, but the exterior is missing a lot of paint. I used it like a pro for a number of years and I bought it from an LA Times photographer who had used it like a pro for a lot longer. It might have been made before you were born. I like to think that it's condition automatically adds credibility to you. Anyone who has a lens that looks THIS BAD must be a pro.

3) The focus is very stiff. About 10 years ago at a party someone spilled a bloody mary on it. And rather than tell me, they hid it behind the sofa in a box filled with napkins. (The caliber of my friends has improved drastically in the last few years I suppose.) When I finally found it, the tomato juice had solidified and it was an unuseable mess. [info]phillforrest using his mad camera repairman skills brought it back from the dead. He disassembled it and restored it but it never got it's smooth focus back. You could probably have a professional repair person this, or do what I did for the next two years and just use it.

4) The lens hood is at the bottom of the Nile.

We won't go into that.

HOW DO I GET THIS AWESOME LENS?

I'm not just going to give it to the first person who asks. (You must answer me these questions three, ere the lens you see...)

Here's what you have to do:

1) You have to have a camera that it will work on. If you're not sure, check the nikon lens compatibility chart.

2) It needs to fill a real and recognizable gap in your current equipment.

3) You need to send me your three best images. Send me links via email or post here. (kyle at kyle cassidy dot com is my email address.) All images must be resized to 800 pixels along the longest axis and they must have your name on them as a watermark. If they're not done like this you won't be considered. It's not so much that I want to be a pain in the rear, it's that I want you to understand what the art world is going to expect of you in the future and I don't want to have to resize everybody's images all day long.

4) You need to write an artist statement which describes a project you want to work on or are working on for which this lens will be helpful. I don't want a list of reasons why you need an 85 1.8, rather I want to be sold on your project, why it's a good idea, why you're driven to do it -- don't talk about lenses. ("I know a lot of hot men/women/dogs/horses/ballet dancers/hair dressers." Is a perfectly acceptable project, so is "I've just taken a job in a hospice and I feel compelled to record the lives of the people I see every day.") I don't know how long your artist statement needs to be, but I think 300-700 words would probably cover anything I needed to say in any of mine. If you need help writing one, there are lots of on-line and in-print resources.

I'm also happy to critique your artist statement and let you know what needs to be fixed.

5) After you get the lens you need to produce work with it. Within 6 months after getting it, you must produce a chap-book (which you can do at blurb or macbooks or you can do it at Kinkos and staple it together) which must be made available for purchase to people who read this blog -- you keep all the money, I just want people to be able to benefit and enjoy your images. 50% of the photos in your chap book should be taken with this lens.

AND WHY SHOULD I JUMP THROUGH ALL THESE HOOPS FOR A STUPID LENS?

You have a lens and a completed project to be proud of, the world has your art, and I have a tiny bit more shelf space where I can hang up a photo of [info]trillian_stars

Some photos from the 85 1.8 -- now you know why you need it.

WHATS THE TIME FRAME ON THIS?

I don't want to make everybody freak out and start writing right away. I'm thinking I'd like to get this lens out the door on my birthday, which is October 31. That gives everybody two months and change to get cracking. If by October 31 nobody has submitted the killer proposal, I'll either extend the deadline or sell the lens on ebay and give the $$$ to City Kitties. (I also reserve the right to end the competition for any foolish reason I want before that time or to change the deadline. This is just in case the lens gets damaged or destroyed somehow before then or someone comes up with an amazing project that is extremely time sensitive.)

Questions? Comments? Demands for clarification?

02:12 pm - Writer's Block: Music and Moods

How do different types of music relate to your moods?

View other answers

Just thought I'd take a quick break from studying to answer this one. Music is one of the most important things in my life. It carries, enhances, soothes and ignites every emotion I experience. Right now a few of my favourite tracks are (in no particular order):

"Gaudete"-Steeleye Span
"Just Like You Imagined"-Nine Inch Nails
"God Be With You"-The Cranberries
"Black & Gold"-Sam Sparro
"Leon The Butcher"-Robert Williamson
"Around The World/Harder Better Faster Stronger"-Daft Punk
"O Salutaris"-Richard Proulx
"This is Us"-Mark Knopfler and Emmy Lou Harris
"Chevaliers de Sangreal"-Hans Zimmer
"I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"-Scissor Sisters

Thanks to everyone who came out to see The Drownout last night. It was awesome. We've been listening to their album nonstop for the past week or so and it was great to finally hear everything live. We had a super-swell time and they're the greatest house guests. There will probably be more photos and better commentary in [info]trillian_stars's lj.

They're on their way to New York today and then across the middle of the country. I recommend seeing them.

08:39 am - Cake and cake and cake.

Hallo, bloggers. No news of the outside world for you except that there is a fair! Yes, a very similar concept to the carnival located in the general area of where I live! Except I think fairs consist more of corn, farmers, and country music. Cal and I have already made our attendance once to test out the funnel cake creatures and examine the fatty population. Also, Cal forced (or conned, or something) me on rides - gasp, horror, shock.

We will be attending again tomorrow evening for more exciting times and photos. Care to join, maaates?

Also, this week is Valentines Week. Cal and I were going to have just a Valentines Day but we've decided that a week is much better for buying gifts and eating cake. Here's this Valentines Weeks cake:

Our wedding cake has been voted to be an ice cream cake or perhaps just ice cream. Hum, hum.
